Invitation to Understanding

Sometimes I find it so amazing how much people know about something that should hold little value at all. Likewise, they know very little about something that should be of great importance to them. One of these “important things” that I am referring to is our own government. I can’t tell you how many times I have spoken with someone and discovered that they can recite any line from any episode of “The Office” but when the conversation turns political they drop out faster than cell phone service in the mountains. I understand that entertainment has its place in our society and we need it to enjoy ourselves but when it takes precedence day in and day out over intellectually strengthening our minds we have a problem.

One of the best things about living in a Democratic country is that we as individuals have the ability to change our country. If we don’t understand how this government runs, however, we won’t be able to make a difference. Many people have told me that voting is worthless because as an individual they don’t contribute anything. While you may feel small and insignificant, don’t rule yourself out. There are others who feel the same way you do. The truth is that as an individual, uniting with others who share your beliefs, you can change almost anything. The more we educate ourselves on the workings of our government and the direction they are heading, the more we can prepare ourselves and attempt to create change.

The R Project understands the importance of unification but we also want to stress the importance of staying educated. We encourage you to skip a re-run of your favorite show that we know you have seen five times over and check out what is going on in D.C. You may be surprised what you find yourself getting excited or fired-up about.
